A Dodgeball Named Desire

DEATH / SWEAT / DODGEBALL

  • Created by: Bloomshed

Experimental sport/theatre piece built around the debris of a faded playscript. This sixty-minute performance sees Bloomshed go up against a sub-elite AFL team in an all-out Battle Royale. Get drenched in the sweat of these Titans of the Court as they compete for the heart of aging southern belle Tennessee Williams. In this brave new world, those who win will inherit the earth, and those who lose are lost for good.

Dodgeball reanimates dead words with the live bodies of athletes. It’s about crashing two discrete worlds together. The creaking moth-eaten ‘Theatre’ collides with the bright dizzy lights of the stadium. High Art vs. hyper-spectacle. Fantasy vs. Reality. Poetry vs. sweat. Our investigation was born from the question: what happens to art and artists in a world motivated by competition? When theatre becomes sport? When a beloved classic is played out in the arena?
