A Bird's Eye View of a Banquet in Brunswick

It's the little changes that change us the most

  • Produced by: Gumboot Theatre

Exploring the effect of change on a community, the Brunswick banquet looks at how it's the big things in life: family, love, children, music and, most importantly, food, that are universal and constant across time and culture. These are the elements of life that anchor us to our humanity. But this is where all the changes happen - changes that separate or divide us. How can the smallest details disengage and isolate people from sharing the most human of gifts? The more things change, the more they stay the same.
The kingfisher is an important local bird in Brunswick. It represents hope and celebration when it returns in November to the Brunswick creeks. Brunswick has been ground zero for much change in Melbourne's history and yet it is anchored by the unbending constancy of the Merri Creek to the east and the Moonee Ponds Creek to the west. The play looks at how we can be so different and apart, and fighting the changes all around us, and all the while experience the same enduring humanity.
