PHOSPHENES is the new audiovisual live show from Australian drummer, producer and multimedia artist CZUCHWICKI, that they developed as a thesis while studying a Master of Arts in Music Production, Technology and Innovation at Berklee College of Music, Valencia Campus.

A phosphene is the phenomenon of “seeing” light without light entering the eye. It is experienced by placing pressure against the eyelids. CZUCHWICKI marries the visual theme of this phenomenon with his brand of experimental electronica, tying explosions of brilliant colour with sounds from the trip-hop, downtempo and industrial movements.

With percussion at its heart, listeners can expect to be enthralled by hypnotic rhythms and luscious synths as they experience the world through a lens of childlike wonder.

PHOSPHENES sees CZUCHWICKI combine percussion and controllerism in an impressive display of musicianship. For this show, CZUCHWICKI developed custom visuals that use audioreactivity to modulate generative patterns in real time and blend them with glitchy silhouettes of the performance using live camera feeds.

About CZUCHWICKI

CZUCHWICKI is the musical project of Polish-Australian drummer, producer and audiovisual artist Jonty Czuchwicki. CZUCHWICKI grew up in Adelaide, Australia where a generation of his family immigrated after escaping the atrocities of WWII. Here he studied a Bachelor Degree in Music Performance at the Australian College of the Arts in Melbourne where he specialised in Percussion.

In 2021 CZUCHWICKI released his first EP entitled Reocurring Dream, and was accepted into the Master of Music Production, Technology and Innovation at Berklee College of Music's Valencia campus in Spain. Commencing the program in 2022, CZUCHWICKI developed an innovative audiovisual live show entitled Phosphenes which blends electronic percussion with controllerism, singing and audioreactive visuals. Always a proponent of rhythmically complex styles, the work contains influences from the left-field electronica, trip-hop and industrial movements.

Since graduating from Berklee in July 2023 CZUCHWICKI has unveiled the music from Phosphenes as an EP, releasing a track per month over a six month period as they promoted their new live show and EP with performances and DJ sets across Spain and Australia. At this time CZUCHWICKI also took part in the Post-Master's Program at Berklee Valencia, where they worked to develop new formats of the Phosphenes AV show and expand their horizons as a producer, engineer and sound designer.
