  • Presented by: Melbourne Fringe and Linden New Art

Join textile artist Phong Chi Lai of Studio PCL in this practical workshop which introduces a selection of local colour possibilities, as well as discussing fibre types, fibre preparation, mordanting options and safety of dyes. We will explore how to collect and prepare plant materials for dyeing, and how to use those materials to dye and eco-print onto natural fibres and textiles as well as modifying colours to extend the palette.

By the end of the class, participants will take home their own eco-printed silk bandanna and an array of naturally dyed fabric swatches to use in their next art/craft project.

We'll use local colour - native Australian flora, weeds and food waste and simple equipment and ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen. Come and discover some of nature’s hidden sources of colours!

What to bring:
•Pen and notepad.
•Wear casual and comfortable clothing as it could get messy.

Takeaway:
•Eco-printed silk bandanna.
•Swatches to start your own natural dyeing diary or to use in your next craft project.
•Notes on the natural dyeing process.
•Practical Knowledge to continue your natural dyeing experiments at home.

Design Fringe is supported by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation
