About Victorian Trades Hall Council
Victorian Trades Hall Council is the oldest continually functioning trade union building in the world. The hall has been a home to the arts since it's inception in 1859 - hosting the Artisans school of design. Providing the first taste of high art to the likes of Tom Roberts, and Frederick McCubbin. Today Trades Hall is still a meeting point for radical artists and a venue for community arts programs like The Fringe and Comedy Festival. Even the carpet you’re walking on now references Trades Hall’s artistic and spiritual ambition: “Bread for all, but roses too”.
