The performer sits cross-legged on the floor in a black singlet and pants next to a collection of haunted objects. There is an illuminated carved pumpkin held by a sheet ghost, next to a pile of vintage suitcases and a large vintage painting of a shop at sea, with a skeleton torso hanging over.

On a day after grief, one lonely artist is left to wade through the belongings of some dead relatives, only to find they have walked into an otherworldly intervention. In Grim Grinning Ghosts, the audience will be guided into the afterlife of those living, and deceased. So step out of the land of the living and join us in this brand new world, and be sure to bring your death certificate.

Created and performed by Alix Kuijpers, winner of the 2023 Adelaide Fringe Emerging Artist Award.

“It is exciting to witness emerging artists who are both talented and perceptive: Kuijpers is obviously a deep thinker and definitely a person of many talents.” Stage Whispers

“Alix oscillates between grief, terror, and joy in jarring yet curated ways through an expert command of voice and body. Flashes of true comedy also surface like guiding lights in a fearful fog... This is a performance for those who know love and loss. This is an important, exploratory work which shouldn’t be missed.” Marina Deller

★★★★1/2 “Grim Grinning Ghosts is more than a contemporary dance work, its an experience.” The Adelaide Show Podcast

About Alix Kuijpers

Alix Kuijpers is a transdisciplinary choreographic artist born and raised on Kaurna Yerta in South Australia. Kuijpers is often recognised for their advocacy for emerging SA artists following their roles as a Carclew Sharehouse Resident (2023) and facilitator of the Australian Dance Theatre Tread Ensemble (2024). In 2021, Kuijpers received a First Class Honours for their work IMMATERIAL, making them the first ever dancer to complete an honours at a South Australian institution. This then led to the creation of ‘i know the end’ which received the 2023 emerging artist award from Adelaide Fringe. Kuijpers' notable sound design practice has seen him work with major collaborators such as Motus Collective and Dance Hub SA. Recent works have seen Kuijpers continue to research his relationship with choreography, movement and music, including the works Cowl (2023), Skin (2023), Wish You Were Here (2024) and Grim Grinning Ghosts, which is currently touring nationally.
