A cute, pink haired, pink eyed, life-sized, puppet character, wearing a shiny, yellow party dress and smiling excitedly, stands in front of wooden framework and exposed electrical wires. They are holding a hand-painted banner on which is painted a picture of the same character against a blue sky background with fluffy clouds.

‘You Are Me’ is a free, all-ages performance staged in a beautiful miniature greenhouse, in which the audience can control the actions of the puppet avatar by typing instructions on a computer keyboard.

The inside of the greenhouse is set up as a tiny world for pink-haired Nuku. There is a little bed, a table and chairs, costumes and all kinds of quirky props, and the greenhouse is lit up like a painting of a fairytale, or a half remembered dream.

A live action video game, a durational theatre installation, a playful participatory community-building event, ‘You Are Me’ combines full body puppetry with a mix of old and new technologies to explore notions of control, identity, conformity and responsibility. In this theatrical reimagining of early text-based video games, the possibilities are only limited by the collective imagination of the gathered crowd.

Created and performed by multidisciplinary artist Niow with systems and sound design by Steph O'Hara.

This project received Cash to Create through the Fringe Fund, with thanks to Lygon Court.
