Now more than ever we need to draw inspiration from the galvanising wisdom of rebels; the people who are not afraid to speak truth to power and have the courage to take action. In this intimate solo performance, actor and theatre maker Janie Gibson delves into the past to invoke the spirit of Joan of Arc and unearth the damning voices of her oppressors in a spell to dissolve the patriarchy.
Originally created for NEXT WAVE and redeveloped in 2019 in Spain under the direction of Anu Almagro (Song of the Goat Theatre) Janie traverses the worlds of music, theatre and performance by weaving together Joan's trial transcripts and letters, sound bites from history, live music, ritual and sword dance.
With musical direction by Xani Kolac (The Twoks). We enter a sonic landscape of wild lamentation, devotional hymns, French folk songs and original compositions; transcendent harmonies pierce the night air underscored by echoing bells, synthesised drones and driven by the pounding drums of war. From the courtroom, to her prison cell, to the battlefields of France - out of the fire we hear Joan speak.

“The dialogue lays bare the vicious misogyny of the Church at that time, and is augmented by striking visual theatre and musical interludes – French songs, sung a cappella, as well as Xani Kolac's melancholy electric violin. It brings the passion of Joan of Arc to life with dignity and dramatic force." Cameron Woodhead, The Age
"Janie has established herself as a powerful and original performance maker"

"Art scintillates when brave and authentic...In bringing their audience their most authentic vulnerabilities, the artists compel us to connect, with the work and with each other. Enclosed and tethered, we think about the spaces we share, and the inevitability of our dependence on each other" Suzy Goes See
