Melbourne Fringe Tour Ready Award Winner (Adelaide Fringe)

You don’t want to miss this South Australian musical comedy duo! After a sold-out run at the Adelaide Fringe, The Coconuts are bringing their debut show to Melbourne for a short time only. If you like Sammy J or Flight of the Conchords this show is for you!

Seemingly cute but surprisingly 'R rated', Leela (she/her) and Shabana (she/her) will shock and delight you with offbeat original songs, deadpan delivery and their unique social perspective. As two women of colour, the duo often poking fun at their shared experiences of being non-white in a white washed world. They’re serious and sexy, political and silly, brown and brown. Shabana and Leela can make jokes you’re not allowed to, and they do.

"The audience is hooked completely. Darkly funny, open observations of what it’s like being brown in a white world wash over with ease." ***** - David O'Brian, The Barefoot Review
"Riotously funny, endearing and surprisingly touching." ***** - Justine Hall, See Do Eat Review
”The buzz is deserved: [... a] formidable debut set.” ***** - James Murphy, Event Adelaide
“I can't think of anything better to see.” - Mina Asfour, Theatre Travels

This project is a Melbourne Fringe Tour Ready Award Winner.

About The Coconuts

They’re brown on the outside but white on the inside - they’re coconuts! The Coconuts are an award-winning, Adelaide-based, musical comedy duo consisting of filmmaker and TV presenter Leela Varghese (Indian/Lebanese) and actor Shabana Azeez (Fijian Indian). Their musical comedy comes through the lens of growing up brown in Australia with the duo often commenting on their shared experience of being non-white in a white washed world. Known for their hilariously creative songwriting, deadpan humour and a knack for flipping without warning from sweet-natured charm to ridiculously crass humour, the duo liken themselves to New Zealand comedy band, Flight of The Conchords. The Coconuts were discovered through the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s annual competition, RAW Comedy, after making it to the South Australian state finals twice. Their debut hour at the 2023 Adelaide Fringe, Brown on The Outside, White On The Inside, was an award-winning show that had a sold-out season. The show received rave reviews for their effortless comedic chemistry and their ability to engage the audience even when dealing with heavy topics, such as racism.
