PLEASE NOTE: THE 2018 MELBOURNE FRINGE FESTIVAL SEASON OF FLY - LYRIC OPERA OF MELBOURNE HAS BEEN CANCELLED.
Lawrence Hargrave was an Australian explorer, engineer and inventor who at the time of Federation led the world in the race to enable man to fly. His story was turned into an opera by Barry Conyngham for the Victorian State Opera in 1984 and now, 34 years after the premiere and a century after Hargrave’s own death, Lyric will innovatively and intimately revive FLY.
In a visionary collaboration, this opera about Australia’s pioneering design engineer will feature set and costume designs by Melbourne interior design company ZUNICA.
Bringing these elements together: history, music, drama and design is a huge job but exactly the sort of collaboration upon which Lyric has built its reputation. This fusion is what makes opera expensive but also what makes it such a powerful artform.
So no matter what your interests are, be they music, aeroplanes, young artists or Australian stories, Lyric’s revival of FLY is the perfect way to engage your passions and bring Australian art and history to life.
