Certain identities like nationality or ethnicity are instantly given or assigned to a person at birth. However, identities form beyond the society’s traditional definition or category we were born into as individuals grow and develop a sense of belonging to multiple cultures and communities in the globalized 21st century. "Colliding Borders: Multiple Senses of Belonging" presents the ongoing journeys of artists from different sociocultural backgrounds exploring the expansion of identities and finding a true personal sense of self as global citizens or the contemporary nomads who travel across the physical borderlines in the universal society. The exhibition extends the new narratives of social, cultural and sexual diversity in identities and meanings of having a sense of belonging to multiple cultures. Artists are challenged to work within community spaces outside the white-cube gallery, engaged to directly interact with the audiences.
This multimedia participatory exhibition includes public programs and workshops across all three venues: Sam Merrifield Library, Niddrie Library, and Flemington Library.
