A big hearted event created by artists and audiences to celebrate, share knowledge and create lasting connections.

It’s kind of like a family concert, where everyone is family!

It was around the campfire that we first marked significant events. We told stories, danced, drew pictures in the sand, and sang about the things we needed to understand. We created rituals to help us build knowledge and share wisdom. And by doing so, we thrived as a community.

Each Campfire is built from the contributions of the people who turn up. You can be a generous audience or you can bring something along to share.

What about performing? I really want to/don’t want to perform...
Your first and most important job is to come along and enjoy the evening. Being a generous audience member is all that you need do.

If you are performing, remember our goal is for people to leave the evening with a full heart. What you share and how you share it will contribute to that. Your job as a performer at Campfire is to meet that invitation and give generously to it. Everything that drew people to Campfire has promised them warmth and generosity and kindness.

If you have any questions you can chat to me (Luke) on the night, I’ll help sort it out.

The amazing Suzanne Andrews will be there on the piano. So, if you have a favourite song up your sleeve we can probably piece it together on the night.

I’d like to do a performance that involves the audience...
Woah there Nelly... activities that require the group to do something aren't on the menu. These kinds of things can be amazing... if you are in the mood. If you aren't... then people can feel 'put on the spot' and that is the opposite of what we are doing at Campfire.

About Luke Hockley

Luke Hockley - I’m a Maker, Mover, Teacher and Performer.

I write, draw, sing, dance, tell stories and make live theatre.

I want the things I make to inspire people to believe they can create the kind of world they want to live in.

For example, Campfire is a family concert where everyone is family. It happens on the first Saturday of the month. It is a performance created by artists and audiences to celebrate, share knowledge and create lasting community connections.
And Sing Your Heart Out is a community singing group (you can call it a choir, but it’s so relaxed, a sing-a-long is a much better description) I’ve created where we belt out favourites from across the generations, have a laugh and take the opportunity to sing with our hearts on our sleeves.

I trained as an acrobat when I was a kid. Then went to University and became a dancer and actor and teacher. I worked as a dancer for many years, won a Greenroom Award (Kage – Headlock, best ensemble), worked with some great people and organisations (Danceworks, Kage, Buzz Dance Theatre, Dancehouse, Expressions Dance Company). I then studied graphic design and then I trained as an Alexander Technique teacher. Now I make work that invites people to think about how we might respond to the important social issues of our time and I use the performing arts to build connections and create belonging.
